Agent Perspective: Paul Royko

Paul Royko is a successful agent with Allstate Insurance who has 23 years in the business. His particular area of expertise is in property insurance—renters, homeowners and landlords. In addition to sharing some of the successes he’s had with NetQuote, Paul also explains in detail the importance of property insurance and how to sell it to prospective clients.
Q:   How long have you been in the insurance business?
A:   I have been in the insurance industry for 23 years, since graduating from college with a business degree. Almost eight of those years were as an insurance claims adjuster, and now fifteen plus years with Allstate Insurance.

Q:   What types of insurance do you sell?
A:   Primarily auto and property insurance—Condominium, Home, Renters and Landlords.

Q:   Why is having renters insurance important?
A:   I remind customers it protects everything they own with more than a lock on their front door.

The policy covers furniture and clothing. If you have a fire or a neighbor has a fire and damages your property, we will replace everything you own new up to coverage selected. It covers loss types like smoke, water, lightening, vandalism, theft and many others. It will also cover items that are stolen away from your apartment. If you are traveling and have your luggage stolen, or personal belongings stolen from your car are just a few examples.

It includes additional living expenses. If you cannot live in your place because of a covered loss, like a fire or water from a broken pipe, we will pay the additional costs for food and lodging up to one year for you to live at another location.

The liability coverage protects you if you cause injury to someone or damage to someone's property. A good example would be if you were riding a bike in a park and accidentally collided with a person walking or also riding a bike and it was your fault, we will pay up to $100,000 to compensate them for pain and suffering, lost wages and medical expenses.

Medical payments coverage will pay up to $1,000 per person for people injured in your apartment. If they stumble and fall and cut their hand, would be an example of this.

Identity theft coverage will help restore the accuracy of your credit if it is damaged by someone who steals your identity. This is an optional coverage. 

Lastly, it covers theft of credit cards, hold ups, and pick pockets as well.

Q:   What is one of the secrets to your success?
A:   Move your lips. I learned it many years ago from a manager and have passed it down to my associates. I haven't stopped flapping them since. In sales it's a numbers game. The more people you talk to the more chances you have to get a sale.

Q:   Why do you use online leads?
A:   I use online leads because the customers overall are very receptive to your call. I don't consider it cold calling. No one really likes that. The potential customer has taken a fair amount of time to provide the information so they can get a quote. The leads are fresh and are received in minutes after a customer completes their request.

Q:   What is your #1 tip for managing online leads?
A:   To tell the truth, we are so busy with the new leads that it is difficult to manage the old ones. They are all saved in a hard drive until we can get to them again down the road.

Q:   What is your #1 tip for growing your business?
A:   There are two:
1) You have to spend money to make money.
2) Hire good people and provide them great incentives. We all work to earn a buck. Don't be stingy in your compensation plan.

Q:   Do you have any parting words of wisdom?
A:   The habit of persistence is the habit of victory!
